On a holiday to Crete, you'll find a stunning mix of gorgeous scenery, historic ruins and sun-soaked resorts. This sums up the island of Crete. The largest of the Greek islands and the birthplace of Zeus, King of all Gods, Crete was home to a glittering civilisation that dominated the Mediterranean for nearly a thousand years.

Cheap flights, accommodation and holidays to Crete

Today, the snow-capped mountains of Crete provide a spectacular backdrop to long stretches of soft sands and secluded bays drifting down to warm, deep-blue waters. Friendly and welcoming, the island is full of colourful markets and bustling tavernas and has a hectic nightlife and modern waterparks. Holidays to Crete are deservedly popular.

Whilst on holiday in Crete, you'll find that there’s a lot to explore on this wonderful and historic island. You can take a trip to explore the Minoan ruins at Knossos Palace, which date back to 2000BC, or visit the Samaria Gorge in the White Mountains with its 18km of spectacular scenery and the lovely village of Agia Roumeli. Discover islands like the mystical volcanic Santorini and the former leper colony of Spinalonga or take a cruise around the island’s caves for swimming and snorkelling adventures.

Eating out

Sample the local specialities on holiday in Crete. You can tuck into plenty of fresh fish and traditional Greek food wherever you stay, in particular mousakka, kalamaris and Greek salads. And while you are dining you can enjoy Bouzouki music and Crete’s own ‘lyra’ music which sounds strangely exotic, almost Middle Eastern. Local delicacies include feta and graviera cheese and the local brandy is mournaoraki.

The warm seas are perfect for swimming but the beaches do have undercurrents and flags will be in use. On the southern coastline the mountains drop sharply in to the sea but the northern coast has gently sloping beaches.

Crete is famous for its beautiful hand-woven textiles and fabrics made into rugs, bedspreads and shoulder bags. You can visit the local factories to buy and watch the lace, pottery and wine being made.

You’ll find plenty of watersports for the energetic, museums to explore, and lots of festivals for fun and enjoyment. June to August is the Arts and Theatre season.
