Located in central Europe, there are many similarities between Slovakian cities and those found in Hungary, Austria and the Czech Republic. Slovakian cities tend to be cosmopolitan places, and many have undergone extensive facelifts over the past couple of years, whilst retaining traditional squares and buildings.

If you’re a nature lover, you’ll be pleased to discover that 40% of Slovakia is covered in forest, which is home to a huge variety of wildlife, including brown bears, wolves, foxes, wild boar, rabbits, squirrels, weasels and muskrats. If you head for the mountains, you may be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of a lynx or chamois. Slovakia has a large number of national parks, and you’ll find that the vast majority of the mountainous areas fall within some kind of park or protected area.

The Tatra Mountains are Slovakia’s highest mountains, and one of Slovakia’s main tourist attractions. They are divided into the High Tatras and Low Tatras and are home to many rare plants and animals. If you’re looking for a mountain walking holiday in Slovakia, or Slovakian ski holidays, then head to the High Tatras, and you won’t be disappointed.

For those looking for an active holiday in Slovakia, what better than rafting? In the mountains of Slovakia there are rivers and streams that cascade through the landscape, hurrying to the sea. White water rafting, kayaking and canoeing have a long tradition in Slovakia, and have become popular tourist activities.

If you’re after a more relaxing Slovakian holiday, you’ll be pleased to hear that Slovakia has become well known internationally for its numerous mineral springs and spas, just waiting to help you unwind.

No trip to Slovakia would be complete without a visit to one of Slovakia’s numerous caves. Currently thirteen of these are open to the public, the longest of which is 9km long. A few of these spectacular natural wonders have been designated UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Whilst traveling around Slovakia, it would be hard not to notice the large number of castles, or forts, which appear to have been built at a similar rate to villages. Originally constructed in the Middle Ages, many of these castles are now no more than ruins. However, there are still a good number that are well worth visiting. Perhaps the best-known, and most visited is Bojnice Castle, closely followed by Spis Castle, which is designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and is the largest fortified castle in Europe.
