This Caribbean paradise is comprised of two islands surrounded by many smaller islets. Trinidad is the largest and most populated of the two islands, with Tobago being smaller and more rural.
Cheap flights, accommodation and holidays to Trinidad and Tobago
The country's capital city is Port of Spain, which is a lively centre on the coast of Trinidad. The town displays an array of Victorian architecture, mingling with modern buildings and landmarks such as the town's cathedral and the National Museum and Art Gallery, which gives a great taste of Trinidad and Tobago's history and culture. For a more first-hand look at the local culture and lifestyle (which is enviable to say the least!), a trip to one of Trinidad and Tobago's smaller towns makes a great day out. Home to carnivals, calypso and steel bands, this country knows how to celebrate, and it's easy to immerse yourself in the fun-loving, relaxed environment of Trinidad and Tobago.
Both islands have a green hilly landscape surrounded on the coast by some of the best beaches in the world. The calm clear waters of the Caribbean Sea wash gently onto soft white sand bordered by palm trees and lush vegetation - a great place for sunbathing, swimming, snorkeling, and soaking up the atmosphere.
Among the many islets surrounding Trinidad and Tobago is Little Tobago, also known as Bird of Paradise Island. This pristine wilderness is easily accessible for day trips and tours, as are several of the other islets. Nature-lovers will also want to visit the Caroni Swamps Bird Sanctuary, to see the area's natural habitat and wildlife. Port of Spain is also home to the Royal Botanic Gardens, which hold a spectacular collection of the country's plant life.
Also well worth a visit is the peculiar Pitch Lake, to the south of Trinidad. A naturally occurring phenomenon, the lake is filled completely with asphalt - an unusual and intriguing sight. Another must-see view on the island is the breathtaking panorama at Fort George. Here you can see across the waters of the Columbus Channel to the Venezuelan mountains in the distance.
Tobago, the smaller sister island of Trinidad, has it's own attractions to offer. With large areas of the landscape untouched, the island offers some of the most biodiverse tropical habitat in the world. The beaches on Tobago are also largely untouched, and it's easy to find your own little paradise tucked away in one of the many bays and beaches around the island. Tobago's main town is Scarborough, where locals and visitors alike gather to enjoy the food, culture, and nightlife of the island. Tobagan inhabitants embrace the laid-back approach to life that is characteristic of many Caribbean islands, and as a result activities such as crab-racing are popular!
Trinidad and Tobago's tropical climate fluctuates between around 22ºC and 32ºC, with wet season predominantly in June and July, and the dry season spanning November - May. During this time, Trinidad and Tobago is a favourite destination for weddings, honeymoons and holidays, and is one of the most popular Caribbean tourist destinations. Trinidad and Tobago really is the trip of a lifetime!
