Dortmund is Westfalia's main city, situated on the north-west edge of the Ruhr Valley. Perhaps more than any other German city, Dortmund has seen an incredible amount of change in recent years. In the late 1800s, Dortmund boasted three active collieries, and soon after followed a whole plethora of heavy industry, including steel manufacturing, for which the city is perhaps best known - a reputation that has stayed with Dortmund to the present day.
Cheap flights and accommodation for city breaks and holidays to Dortmund
Dortmund was largely obliterated during the Second World War, and as a result, much of the city today has a modern feel to it. The heavy industry has been replaced with light and information industries, and Dortmund has become a cosmopolitan city, renowned for technology, research and development, culture, and the near obsession with sports that the city has cultured.
Dortmund has much to offer the visitor, with fantastic shopping, from department stores to chic boutiques, cafes, bars, pubs and restaurants aplenty. At Christmas time Dortmund hosts one of the largest Christmas markets in Germany, and draws visitors from across Europe. Year round the city offers a great selection of museums, theatres, concert halls, art galleries and interesting monuments to Dortmund’s past.
