Holidays to Madeira are a delight, on this lush, exotic island, which is an oasis of colourful plants and flowers. Madeira is often called "the floating garden" and just off the coast of Africa, it was discovered by the Portuguese in 1419. It is a quiet haven of outstanding natural beauty where immense mountains tower over tropical plantations, tucked-away villages and ancient churches. A holiday to Madeira will be a wonderful experience.

Whilst on holiday in Madeira, visit its capital, Funchal, a vibrant cosmopolitan city of tree lined cobbled streets many of them decorated with mosaic. A fifteenth century cathedral, harbour, fortress and museum are just some of the many attractions of this city sometimes known as ‘Little Lisbon’ despite a distinct British ambience. Funchal is home to over half the island’s population it has some great shops, restaurants, cabarets and casinos, for you to explore on your Madeiran holiday. There is a good choice of accommodation on the island, with Madeiran hotels mainly in the four and five star bracket with deluxe hotels like Reid’s Palace, traditional Quintas and modern resorts.

It is an island that enjoys celebrating – and there is a packed schedule of public holidays and traditional festivals attracting tourists as well as locals. June is a particularly good month with the music festival, which includes classical and jazz concerts, and themed firework celebration in the harbour each Saturday.

If you're looking to do some exploring whilst on holiday in Madeira, you'll find plenty to hold you rinterest. On the west coast you can explore Porto Moniz with its volcanic rock pools, visit tumbling waterfalls and enjoy the fine view of Encumeada. Or travelling east you can enjoy the panoramas from the highest peak of the island, Pico Do Ariero, and discover the villages of Santana, with its colourful thatched cottages or ‘palheiros’, and historic Machico. A Madeiran holiday is ideal for those looking to relax in beautiful surroundings.

The Beaches

On holiday in Madeira, you'll find that although there are several sea water pools at Porto Moniz, Madeira’s rocky coastline isn’t really beach holiday material. However there is a stunning 9km beach at neighbouring Porto Santo - a relaxing ferry ride or short flight away. And there is a public lido with access to the sea for swimming.

There are lots of lovely walks on this scenic island, many of which run parallel to the island’s amazing levada water channels, a natural irrigation system. Also, there are mountain and ridge walks for the adventurous. Golfers will love the challenge of courses set amongst remarkable scenery some 600 metres above sea level: 27 holes at Santo de Serra and 18 holes at Palheiro. Depending on the season there is ‘Tag and release’ big-game and deep-sea fishing, as well as diving, windsurfing, sailing and water-skiing.
