Holidays to La Palma

La Palma is a lush green oasis with stunning countryside, quiet beach resorts, quaint villages and tropical plantations. A holiday to La Palma is far from the hustle of big resorts and is the perfect destination for those who wish to discover something of the nature of a country, or themselves, as part of their holiday. Farming is the island’s staple and the island’s tourism is relatively undeveloped. There are a few hotels, one modern with four stars, but mostly the accommodation, either on the coast or in rural villages, is in pretty, traditional apartment blocks, rural paradors, fincas and spacious villas.

The beaches, with mainly black sand, are Los Cancajos on the east coast and on the west coast at Puerto Naos. Puerto Naos get the most sunshine and there are quieter beaches including one naturist beach, to the south of the town.

On holiday in La Palma, you'll discover dramatic scenery. Rugged mountains give way to sweeping valleys of palms and pines. The National Park of La Caldera de Taburiente is one of the largest craters in the world where pine trees cling to steep slopes and streams tumble down to the crater floor where there are beautiful pools draped by Canary willow. If you' re looking to do some walking whilst on holiday in La Palma, there are some lovely walks to the north of the island and in the south there is the ‘Ruta de los Volcanesa’ which follows the route of the live volcanoes.

The island’s capital, Santa Cruz, is a charming city with colonial architecture and traditional buildings, is a delightful place, and not to be missed on your La Palma holiday.

Relaxing

There are some lovely walks on the island, but for an aerial view of the dramatic landscapes, try hang-gliding from the hills above Puerto Naos. Budding astronomers will enjoy the Observatorio Astrofiscio at the edge of the National Park.

Eating Out

The island has a thriving farming community with plenty of fresh produce available, for you to enjoy on your holiday to La Palma. La Palma also produces wine, rum, tobacco and bananas. The coastal villages have great seafood fresh from the sea and inland there are good meat restaurants in the towns and villages.

Climate

The lush green landscape, particularly in the north east, reflects its regular rainfall. Puerto Naos and Tazacorte on the west coast are the sunniest spots although Santa Cruz and Los Cancajos also get a fair amount of sunshine.

Paradors and Rural Houses

La Palma is a lush green island whose main attraction is its scenery. The perfect way to enjoy the scenery is to live amongst it and experience the rural way of life. There is a lovely choice of houses, apartments and hotels in some of the most beautiful areas of the island in the east, south and west.
