Holidays to Tenerife

Year round sunshine and warm blue waters. Fresh green valleys of pines and flowers. Strange rock formations and dramatic black beaches. Banana plantations and lively nightlife. No wonder holidays to Tenerife, the largest of the Canary Islands, are one of Spain’s most popular destinations.

Tenerife, the largest and most developed of all the Canary Islands, is an island of contrasts. In the sub tropical north you’ll find towering cliffs and lush green valleys, banana plantations and carpets of exotic flowers. The south has an arid landscape with fascinating twisted lava. Many of the beaches have black, volcanic sands, but if you prefer, there are some featuring golden sands, taken from the Sahara Desert. Relaxing beach holidays to Tenerife are very popular, but if you’re the active sort, its unique terrain make it ideal for a wide variety of sports, ranging from golf to rock-climbing.

Exploring

Whilst on holiday in Tenerife, there's plenty to explore - dominating the island, and well worth a visit is Mount Teide. This giant volcano, which reaches 3,800m, is Spain’s highest peak. You can take a cable car to the top from Las Canadas National Park to enjoy some truly amazing views. For another great day’s excitement on your Tenerife holiday, catch one of the whale and dolphin watching trips from Puerto Colon harbour. Soak up the cosmopolitan atmosphere of the island’s capital Santa Cruz. Visit the dramatic Los Gigantes cliffs, the stunningly beautiful Botanical Gardens at Puerto de la Cruz or head for La Laguna, Tenerife’s original capital, and explore its fascinating streets where the architecture dates back to the 17th Century. There are 8 Blue Flag beaches in Tenerife., making a beach holiday to Tenerife a great choice. For more information see www.blueflag.org Go in search of a fiesta in the summer months and join the locals in their lively celebrations.

Shopping

The Canary Islands are duty free so there are brand names and upmarket shopping in the larger resorts like Puerto de la Cruz. Watches are particularly good buys. Elsewhere haggle in the island’s busy markets selling lace, leather, pottery, woodwork and exquisite embroidery, all of which will make lovely souvenirs of your holiday to Tenerife. While most resort shops open all day and every day, siestas are still common in the capital.

Relaxing

Take your pick from adventure sports like rock-climbing, abseiling, caving and paragliding, or the gentler activities of biking, trekking, horse-riding and tennis. Tenerife boasts six golf courses for you to test your handicap on. For nature lovers and walkers, the diverse range of terrain and scenery provide ample opportunity to explore spectacular rock formations, lava deposits and all manner of flora, including huge cacti, sweet smelling bougainvillea, hibiscus and nasturtiums.
