No trip to Avignon would be complete without a visit to the famous Palais de Papes (Popes’ Palace. This enormous palace was home to the popes from 1309 – 1377, and is today, one of the most important gothic buildings in Europe. For many years however, the Palace was neglected and has only relatively recently become a major tourist attraction. Another must see attraction in Avignon is Pont d’Avignon. Although only 4 of the original 22 sections survive, the bridge still attracts large crowds.

As well as plenty to see and do in Avignon itself, Avignon makes a great base for exploring Provence and Languedoc.
