Madrid

Few cities have the zest of Madrid - Spain's headiest city, where the revelling lasts long into the night, strangers quickly become friends, passion blooms in an instant, and you'll become swiftly addicted to the city's charms.

Cheap flights, holidays, accommodation and city breaks to Madrid

In no other European capital will you find the city centre so busy so late into the night. To experience Madrid is to explore its restaurants and eateries, prop up its countless bars, and be swept up in the nocturnal madness of its music scene and clubs.

Madrid is Europe’s highest city (650m/2100ft), and it’s also surprisingly compact and easy to explore on foot. The oldest quarters are squeezed in between Paseo del Prado, where you’ll find the city’s great art galleries and the Palacio Real. Close to Palacio Real you’ll discover the Moorish quarter, one of Madrid’s oldest districts. There’s a short stretch of city wall here, built by the early-medieval Muslim rulers in the 9th century. Soak up the atmosphere at open-air theatre and music performances held here in the summer months.

Converted in 1819 from a natural history museum to a repository of Spanish art held in royal collections, the Museo del Prado hosts over 7,000 works. Of course, with a museum this size you really should visit more than once, particularly as less than half of the collection is on view at any given time. For a break from the art galleries, head for the shops in Plaz de Callao and Puerto del Sol or try out the flea market, Mercado Rastro, open on Sundays. A stroll in Madrid’s loveliest public gardens is one of the best ways to end the day.
